Abraham Doby serves as Captain for Surry County Sheriff Department. He is the direct supervisor of the Division of Animal Control and Shelter Operations overseeing the animal shelter, and officers sworn and nonsworn. He has served in this role since July 2012.

As Captain over the Animal Control Division, Abraham has developed and implemented thorough standard operating procedures for the shelter and for enforcement of laws and ordinances. He has established an active volunteer and outreach program, established a social media presence to become completely transparent regarding animal intake information. He has developed a network of over 100 approved rescue and foster organizations. He also created a behavior assessment for intake of animals to establish adoption suitability, providing the animal with the most appropriate opportunity for adoption and ensuring the safety of the public. Abraham has worked with local government to author and enforce a tethering ordinance for the county. He currently holds several certifications including but not limited to Advanced Law Enforcement Certification, Certified Euthanasia technician. Certified Rabies Vaccination Technician, and NACA certifications.

Prior to animal control, Abraham’s career involved working in the sheriff department in various roles including court bailiff, patrol officer, training officer, K-9 handler, Narcotics Officer, Criminal Investigation Division and Lieutenant of Patrol. As Captain, he maintains a strong focus on Animal Control but also supervises the Division of Patrol Officers, Criminal Investigations Division, Internal Affairs, and School Resource Officers.

Abraham’s goals include increasing public awareness of the need to spay/neuter their pets, the need for rabies vaccination and improving the welfare of animals in the shelter and the community. He also has the goal of ensuring his dedicated staff have opportunities for education and advancement.

Abraham has been married to his wife Kelli for 30+ years, has son, daughter-in-law and two daughters. He also has two dogs, a cat, livestock and is a hobby beekeeper.
